The Guatemalan Intellectual Property Registry (RPI) introduced an Accelerated Patent Grant (APG) system on November 3, 2025, through a cooperation agreement with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). This allows inventors to fast-track patent applications in Guatemala if their invention has already been granted in the US, provided claims match and standards like novelty and industrial applicability are satisfied.
This reform streamlines the process under Guatemala’s Industrial Property Law (Decree 57-2000), reducing approval times from years to months and boosting innovation for local and foreign applicants. Rights holders can submit USPTO documents directly, cutting costs and backlogs while aligning with international standards.
